How To Avoid Business Owner Burnout

health work-life balance

There are so many business owners who feel stressed and are experiencing the early symptoms of burnout because of the amount of time they're spending on content creation to attract new clients.

They are seeing some success from their marketing strategy, but not as much as they'd like or as fast as they'd like it. They want more success to happen overnight, which produces constant pressure to create more and more content.

The real reason you are on the verge of business owner burnout

When I have a conversation with business owners who are feeling exhausted because of content creation, they think the problem is how many hats they're wearing in their business.

But more often than not, the real issue is...they aren't making consistent offers in their content that invite people to work with them and they aren't actively growing their audience, because it feels uncomfortable and opens them up to rejection.

Think about that logically though.

If you don't make consistent offers and invite people to work with you in your coaching program, or copywriting service, or graphic design service, or whatever online service based business you own, and you don't increase the number of people seeing your offers - how can you expect clients to regularly sign up and pay for your services?

You simply can't.

So in this situation, the solution to avoiding business burnout and endlessly creating content that doesn't convert as well as you'd like, is to make consistent offers in your content, while growing your audience and the number of people seeing what you post.

Logically, I know you know that.

But it can feel uncomfortable and weird to make offers and become more visible to your audience. So what do you do?

How to make offers and grow your audience while feeling uncomfortable

There are many different life coaching tools I can teach you to deal with the discomfort, but I don't want you to feel overwhelmed from reading this one post, so let's focus on the one most helpful tool in this situation. The tool is called The Model and it can be used to increase emotional energy.

The Model tells us that there are circumstances in the world, which are facts or data.

The way you interpret those circumstances make up your thoughts, your beliefs, which are opinions only.

Your thoughts, your beliefs create your feelings, your emotions.

Your feelings, your emotions drive your actions or inactions.

Your actions or inactions produce your results...in both your life and business.

Think of The Model like this...

C = Circumstance

T = Thought

F = Feeling

A = Action

R = Result

The two types of models you should create

We each have thousands and thousands of thoughts each day. The majority of those thoughts are on default, playing in the back of your mind. I like to call those, unintentional thoughts.

So the first type of model you should create is your unintentional model.

You cannot control each and every thought you have, but you can work on the ones producing the biggest problems for you. You know the ones I'm talking about...the thoughts that are giving you results you don't like and want to change.

The way to do that is to identify your unintentional thoughts and what they're currently creating for you, and then create intentional thoughts that help you create what you really want.

So the second type of model you should create is your intentional model.

It's not always a fun process to create these two types of models, but they will help you prevent burnout and they can change your life.

An example of your unintentional model about making an offer

Ok. So let's say you want to post an offer on social media today, but you are worried family members will judge you. More specifically, you're worried your mom will see it and judge you.

What is the worst thing you can imagine your mom saying after reading your offer post? That is your circumstance.

In this example, let's say the worst thing you can imagine your mom saying is, "You're just trying to get money from people."

Circumstance: Your mom reads your offer post and says to you, "You're just trying to get money from people."

When you hear your mom say that, you think, "I did something wrong." That is your thought.

Thought: "I did something wrong."

When you think, "I did something wrong," you feel shame inside of you.

Feeling: Shame

Actions: You delete the offer post, decide to not post another offer again, you stop working on your business, you cry, hide under your bed sheets, and maybe even avoid your mom.

The result of this is definitely not what you want, because deep down you do really want to grow your business, sign more clients, and make a bigger impact in their lives.

An example of your intentional model about making an offer

Ok. So you obviously don't like your unintentional model. To prevent this from happening, you may think you need to set boundaries with your mom, but that's not what I recommend you do.

Instead, I recommend you create an intentional model, using the same circumstance, because you cannot control what your mom says to you.

Ok. So let's say you want to post an offer on social media today, but you're worried your mom will see it and say, "You're just trying to get money from people."

Circumstance: Your mom reads your offer post and says to you, "You're just trying to get money from people."

When you hear your mom say that, you immediately think, "I did something wrong," but you catch yourself, because you know how that will end.

Instead, you intentionally think, "My mom thinks I did something wrong, but I don't agree with her."

Thought: "My mom thinks I did something wrong, but I don't agree with her."

Feeling: Indifferent

Actions: You post your offer, continue with your day, and finish your conversation with your mom.

The result of this is definitely more in line with what you want. Your motivation to work on your business today is unchanged. So you do.

Do you see how powerful The Model can be?

The next time you want to post an offer or invitation for someone to work with you, create an unintentional model and intentional model, take action and post it, and move on with your day.

Let's look at an example of how to use The Model to grow your audience and become more visible.

An example of your unintentional model about growing your audience

Ok. So let's say you want to friend or connect with 50 people everyday on social media, so more people see your offers, and may want to become your new client.

But reaching out to people and asking them to friend or connect with you is uncomfortable and you don't like to feel rejected.

Let's plug that into an unintentional model.

Circumstance: You send a friend request or connection request to 50 people today.

Thought: They won't accept my request.

Feeling: Rejection

Action: Stop sending requests as part of your marketing strategy, think about other ways to grow your audience, avoid looking at their responses or your stats on social media.

Result: You don't give them the opportunity to accept your request in the future and you feel rejection ahead of time.

This is definitely not what you want to happen, so let's create an intentional model.

An example of your intentional model about growing your audience

Ok. So your circumstance doesn't change. Let's say you want to friend or connect with 50 people everyday on social media, so more people see your offers, and may want to become your new client.

Circumstance: You send a friend request or connection request to 50 people today.

Thought: Some people won't accept my request, but others will.

Feeling: Confident

Action: Continue to send requests as part of your marketing strategy, look at their responses and your stats on social media, analyze if this strategy is working for you or not.

Result: You increase your audience size, which creates the opportunity for more people to see your offers.

This is definitely what you want to happen, and it doesn't feel as uncomfortable or weird as you thought it would.
